We explore flexible structures, often with more than one stable shape, for actuation and sensing. To get compliant and stretchable structures, we use textile equipment to install fibers with conductive, elastic, and optical waveguiding properties. We also use microfabrication to make “pop-up” microdevices that can wrap around fibers. Applications include sensing flow inside lab-on-a-chip systems, capturing body motion with soft and breathable devices, and controlling soft robots.
